What we know: Some rules checked

If you don’t see a price here, it doesn’t mean the bag is free. Check the final charge and acceptance rules with American Airlines for your flight.

When these rules apply

U.S. domestic, AA-marketed and AA-operated flights; ticket date, fare and payment channel are mandatory.

Checked, carry-on and personal item limits

Start with these published limits, then check the fare you bought. Measure the packed bag on the outside, including wheels and handles.

Standard checked size (linear in)62
Largest accepted weight (lb)100

Checked bags, extra pieces and excess fees

  • Main Cabin after April 9: first/second bag $45/$55 online or $50/$60 at the airport.
  • Basic Economy from May 18: first/second bag $50/$60 online or $55/$65 at the airport.

These prices apply only to the conditions listed above. Your route, fare, ticket date, or benefits can change what you pay.

How to add and pay for bags

  1. Open official reservation/check-in.
  2. Check included bags and eligible route.
  3. Select the correct travelers and direction; save the receipt.

Timing: Eligible online purchase until two hours before departure.

Online standard-bag payment does not necessarily settle excess weight or size.

Free bags and possible savings

  • Compare online payment, existing benefits and repacking before purchasing another bag.

Special items, connections and refunds

We couldn’t confirm one American Airlines price that covers every sports item, stroller, or mobility device. Ask about the exact item you’re bringing, especially if another airline flies part of the trip. If a paid checked bag is delayed or lost, report it to the airline and keep the bag tag and fee receipt.

Watch out for this
  • Use the higher of weight and size surcharges, not their sum. A free standard bag does not automatically waive excess charges.

Worked bag examples

AA: one 52 lb, 60 in bag

Route: U.S. domestic · Fare: Main Cabin · Ticket issued: 2026-10-20 · Travel date: 2026-11-15 · Bag number: 1 · Weight: 52 lb · Size: 60 linear in

The listed charges add up to 75 USD in this example. Your checkout may differ. Online standard bag fee plus the applicable excess assessed under the published table; not a promise that excess can be prepaid.

AA: 101 lb ordinary bag is not accepted

Route: U.S. domestic · Fare: Main Cabin · Ticket issued: 2026-10-20 · Travel date: 2026-11-15 · Weight: 101 lb · Size: 60 linear in

The ordinary bag rule does not accept this item. Paying a higher bag fee may not solve the problem. Do not return a larger payment amount as a solution to refusal.

Questions to answer before you pay

Can a baggage calculator work with weight alone?

It can flag a possible weight problem, but a complete price also needs fare, route, bag number, size, benefits and payment timing. Missing inputs must remain visible.

Next: Enter each bag’s size and the ticket details.

Does one extra pound always cost the same?

No. Published weight bands differ. A small overage can trigger a flat band rather than a per-pound charge.

Next: Use the carrier’s native unit and exact band.

Do I add weight and size charges together?

Only when the airline’s rule says so. AA uses the higher excess category; Delta adds applicable categories; Southwest has a combined row.

Next: Inspect the carrier-specific combination rule.

Cabin item decision

ItemResearched outside dimensions
Personal item18 × 14 × 8 in
Carry-on22 × 14 × 9 in

AA cabin items; handles and wheels count for the carry-on. Personal item must fit under the seat. A dimensions check tells you whether the bag fits the researched box; it does not determine fare inclusion, cabin space or the gate agent’s final acceptance. Open the official cabin-bag policy.

Checked bags

This page covers U.S. domestic, AA-marketed and AA-operated flights; ticket date, fare and payment channel are mandatory.. The standard weight listed here is 50 lb. Check the purchased fare for the included piece count.

Carry-on

The official cabin source lists 22 × 14 × 9 inches for the outside box. Fare inclusion and aircraft space are different questions from size.

Personal item

The official cabin source lists 18 × 14 × 8 inches for the underseat box. The item still needs to fit under the seat on the operating flight.

Overweight fees

The standard weight listed here is 50 lb. A heavier bag may cost extra. Check the base bag price and the excess charge together before you pay.

Oversized fees

The standard outside-size limit listed here is 62 linear in. Measure outside length, width and height and separately check the maximum accepted size.

Extra bag numbers

Your second or third bag may cost more than your first. Start with the bags included on your ticket, then price each additional piece for that traveler.

Fare baggage allowance

American Airlines allowance cannot be inferred from the brand alone. Match the fare printed on the ticket, the route, any bundle and the date the ticket was issued or changed.

Add or pay for bags

Open official reservation/check-in. Check included bags and eligible route. Eligible online purchase until two hours before departure.

Free checked bags

Compare online payment, existing benefits and repacking before purchasing another bag. A standard-piece waiver does not automatically waive excess weight or size.

Sports equipment

Bringing a bike, golf bag, skis, or an instrument? Check the airline’s packing and special-item rules before using an ordinary checked-bag price.

Family and medical bags

A stroller, car seat, or mobility device may follow different rules from a suitcase. Tell the airline what you’re bringing and check its handling and battery instructions.

Connecting flights

Check whether each segment is marketed and operated by American Airlines or a partner. A separate ticket can require a new bag purchase and physical recheck.

Baggage refunds

If a paid checked bag is lost or significantly delayed, report it to the airline and keep your bag tag and fee receipt. An unused prepaid bag has a different refund question.

For any unresolved detail, check the American Airlines policy for the current ticket and operating flight.
