An American Airlines personal item may measure no more than 18 × 14 × 8 inches and must fit under the seat in front of you. American lists a separate 22 × 14 × 9 inch box for the larger carry-on. Both are outside measurements, so a filled pocket or a rigid handle matters.
Personal item versus carry-on
| Item | Published box | Storage place | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal item | 18 × 14 × 8 in | Under the seat | The packed bag's widest, tallest and deepest points |
| Carry-on | 22 × 14 × 9 in | Overhead bin or under a seat if it fits | Handles and wheels as well as the main shell |
American says one qualifying personal item and one qualifying carry-on may be brought aboard. This does not turn a second backpack into another personal item. A tote that is soft when empty may become too deep after you pack a laptop, charger and jacket. Close every pocket and measure it in the shape it will have at the airport.
A useful check at home
Imagine a backpack that measures 17 × 13 × 7 inches empty but 18 × 14 × 9 inches after packing. Its first two sides remain within the published personal-item box; its 9-inch depth exceeds the 8-inch side. Moving the charger or jacket may solve the fit problem. A total of 41 linear inches would not be a substitute for the three-side check.
If it cannot fit as a personal item, check whether it qualifies as your single carry-on. That is a separate classification with a different size box. On a small aircraft or at a full gate, cabin space may still lead to gate handling; keep medication, valuables and spare batteries accessible.
What does not count the same way?
American's policy lists certain baby and medical items separately from the ordinary personal-item and carry-on count. That depends on the item and traveler. Read the official exceptions rather than treating any extra tote as medical or infant gear. A partner-operated flight can use its own cabin limits even when the reservation displays an American flight number.
Use the personal item size checker for the three dimensions, then compare the result with the operating airline's current policy. For a larger cabin suitcase, see American Airlines carry-on size.
