Frontier's official size and weight FAQ lists 40 lb as the ordinary checked-bag weight limit, with 62 linear inches as the ordinary size limit. So a 41 lb bag is already over the standard weight. But that doesn’t tell you the full price: the bag itself and the extra weight can be separate charges.

For example, a 45 lb bag falls above the standard weight, but you still need the base bag price for your flight to know the total. At 55 lb, two official Frontier pages give different heavy-bag charges. Rather than picking the cheaper figure, check the date on your booking and ask Frontier which rule applies.
Check the date-specific conflict
The current FAQ describes one surcharge for 51–99.99 lb. Frontier's Bag Options page describes a different amount for bookings made from April 4, 2026. The latter includes an explicit booking-date condition. Because a traveler may see both pages, preserve the booking date, check the price in the actual Frontier purchase flow and ask the airline if the written sources still disagree.
When to repack
Before moving contents into a second bag, compare the cost of another checked piece and the two bags' new weights. If a second piece has a dynamic price, do not call the move a saving. An item above the airline's accepted maximum may need cargo or repacking rather than a higher fee. Check the official acceptance rule as well as the ordinary 40 lb threshold. If a partner operates the flight, confirm that operator's policy separately.
