Overweight Baggage Fees: Read the Band

First find the standard threshold and the maximum accepted weight. Then check whether the excess is added to a base piece charge and whether the airline rounds at a boundary.

Why the answer can change

At 50 lb versus a labeled 23 kg limit, conversion alone is not enough to decide a close call. Reweigh and consult the policy’s original unit.

Check your own trip

  1. Start with the airline flying each leg, the fare you bought, and the dates on your ticket.
  2. Count bags for each traveler. Measure the packed outside of every bag, then find both the standard limit and the largest bag the airline will accept.
  3. Look up the bag fee, extra-piece fee, and any weight or size charge separately. If one amount is missing, you don’t have a complete total yet.
  4. Check the final price in the airline’s booking or check-in flow, and save the receipt.

Before you pay

Use the size and fee tools to put your bag details in one place. If we can’t confirm the full cost, they’ll tell you what still needs an airline quote.

Where this gets tricky

A 52 lb bag can fall into a different band from a 54 lb bag on a dated American policy row. A 40 lb Frontier standard bag crosses its threshold sooner.

Here’s what to check: Preserve decimals near the cutoff. Check the maximum accepted weight before treating any excess fee as a promise that the bag can fly.

What the numbers can tell you

AA: one 52 lb, 60 in bag

Route: U.S. domestic · Fare: Main Cabin · Ticket issued: 2026-10-20 · Travel date: 2026-11-15 · Bag number: 1 · Weight: 52 lb · Size: 60 linear in

The listed charges add up to 75 USD in this example. Your checkout may differ. Online standard bag fee plus the applicable excess assessed under the published table; not a promise that excess can be prepaid.
