Air Canada lists a standard carry-on box of 21.5 × 15.5 × 9 inches and a personal item box of 17 × 13 × 6 inches on its current baggage page. The page says wheels and handles count. Size is only half the decision: some Economy Basic tickets issued from January 3, 2025 permit only the personal item on specified routes.
Dimensions and entitlement are different
| Item | Published size | Check before bringing it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard carry-on | 21.5 × 15.5 × 9 in | Does the fare and route include a standard cabin item? |
| Personal item | 17 × 13 × 6 in | Will the packed item fit under the seat? |
Air Canada describes the Basic restriction for travel within Canada and to or from the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Its page also describes an exception when a Basic itinerary connects onward to an international destination. The ticket, issue date and full itinerary matter; do not reduce every “Basic” booking to the same two-word rule.
Example with a fitting suitcase
A roller measuring 21 × 15 × 8 inches fits the published standard box. But a restricted Basic fare may still leave out the carry-on. Check the fare and route you bought before deciding whether to pay for a bag. A 17 × 13 × 6 inch underseat item can fit its own box, as long as the packed handles and pockets stay within it.
The carry-on size checker can tell you whether the bag fits the box. It can’t tell you whether your fare includes that bag. Air Canada says an oversized cabin bag may need to be checked and may cost extra. If another airline flies the first leg, check that airline’s cabin rules too.
For medical aids, baby care items and battery-equipped smart bags, read the separate Air Canada sections. If a small aircraft requires a cabin bag to go in the hold, remove any battery the airline instructs you to carry into the cabin. The official policy and reservation control the final answer.
