British Airways separates a 22 × 18 × 10 inch cabin bag from a smaller 16 × 12 × 6 inch hand bag that must fit under the seat. The cabin bag dimensions include wheels and handles. A Basic ticket can still have no checked baggage, so a cabin allowance should not be read as a free hold bag.
The BA cabin pair
| Item | Published size | Practical handling |
|---|---|---|
| Hand bag | 16 × 12 × 6 in | Keep essentials; fits under the seat |
| Cabin bag | 22 × 18 × 10 in | Lift into the overhead bin; may be placed in the hold on a busy flight |
BA's page shows both categories in its cabin allowances, but a partner airline may apply different baggage rules. It also asks customers to check the exact checked-bag allowance in Manage My Booking or its baggage calculator. Do that before deciding whether the cabin bag is enough for the trip.
Why the bags should be packed differently
BA describes the hand bag as the safer place for medication, electronics, travel documents and other essentials because it stays in the cabin. A larger cabin bag may be checked into the hold if there is not enough overhead space. Do not put spare power banks or lithium batteries into a bag that might travel in the hold; move them to the hand bag when instructed.
A suitcase measuring 22 × 17 × 9 inches may fit the published cabin box; expanding the front pocket to 11 inches exceeds its 10-inch side. Measure the packed outside, including wheels and handles. The carry-on size checker compares those sides but cannot determine available overhead space.
For a transatlantic trip, also check whether your particular fare includes a 23 kg checked piece or lists no checked bag. A traveler choosing between Basic and a higher fare should compare the airfare difference and actual bag price, rather than assuming the larger cabin allowance changes with the checked-bag product. See the transatlantic baggage guide.
