Delta Personal Item Size: Underseat Bag Rules

Delta permits one carry-on and one personal item under its published cabin policy. The smaller item needs to fit beneath the seat in front of you. Delta’s page doesn’t give one universal inch-by-inch personal-item box, so don’t rely on a number copied from another airline.

What Delta publishes

Category Published information What remains uncertain
Personal item One underseat item such as a purse or laptop bag A single three-side numerical box for all seats and aircraft
Carry-on Up to 22 × 14 × 9 in and 45 linear in Space on the specific aircraft or at a full gate

This distinction matters for a backpack that is smaller than a cabin suitcase but still bulky under a particular seat. Calling it a “personal item” in a product listing does not make it fit. Check the packed height, width and depth and consider the underseat structure of your seat or aircraft if the item is close to the available space.

Example: a bag that fits another airline's box

Say you find an 18 × 14 × 8 inch bag sold as an American Airlines personal item. That label doesn’t tell you whether it will fit under the seat on your Delta flight. Delta permits an underseat item, but you still need to check the actual fit. The personal item checker won’t borrow American’s numbers and give you a misleading pass.

Delta's carry-on rule is different: its published page gives both individual side limits and a 45-inch combined limit. If the bag is actually intended for the overhead bin, use the Delta carry-on size guide.

Regional aircraft and gate handling

Delta notes that some Delta Connection aircraft have limited overhead storage. A bag that meets a published carry-on box can still be handled at the gate when the cabin cannot hold it. Keep medicine, documents and spare batteries where you can remove them. If your itinerary includes a partner, confirm the operating carrier's cabin policy for that segment.

Before leaving home, review the current Delta page, then place the packed item under a comparable seat or ask the airline about the particular aircraft when fit is marginal. Do not buy another bag service based only on an online product label.
