Delta's published carry-on limits are 22 × 14 × 9 inches for the individual sides and 45 linear inches for their sum. Handles and wheels count. A bag must satisfy both checks; a small total alone does not excuse an oversized individual side.
Check the box and the sum
| Check | Published Delta limit | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Individual sides | 22 × 14 × 9 in | A 23-inch side exceeds the first side even if the other sides are small |
| Combined size | 45 linear in | 22 + 14 + 9 = 45 |
| Personal item | Underseat fit | No single numeric box was verified from this policy page |
Delta says one qualifying carry-on and one personal item can travel in the cabin. These are different categories. The carry-on goes in an overhead bin when it does not fit under a seat; the personal item should fit under the seat in front of you.
Example at the boundary
A packed roller bag measuring exactly 22 × 14 × 9 inches is at both published limits. A 23 × 13 × 9 inch bag also sums to 45 inches, but its 23-inch side exceeds the individual length limit. The carry-on size checker compares the three outside sides. Do not rotate a rigid suitcase in a way that makes it impossible to stow safely.
Delta Connection and full flights
Delta's policy notes restricted overhead space on some Delta Connection aircraft, including small regional planes. A carry-on meeting the published box may still have to be handled at the gate. If a gate agent asks you to check it, remove spare batteries and power banks and keep medication, travel documents and keys. Keep the claim tag and ask where the bag will be returned.
A partner-operated connection may use a different cabin allowance. Confirm the operating carrier for each segment rather than relying on the Delta marketing flight number alone. If you are deciding between an underseat backpack and a roller, read the Delta personal item guide before packing.
