A cabin bag changes category when it is checked

A bag that was acceptable in the cabin may contain items that cannot remain inside once it is placed in the hold. FAA guidance requires spare lithium batteries and power banks to remain in compliant carry-on carriage. Remove them before handing over a bag for gate checking.

This matters when a traveler is trying to avoid a cabin fee, solve a size problem or reduce a bag’s weight. The cheapest packing arrangement is not a valid option if it violates safety restrictions.

Check the actual battery, not just the suitcase brand

Capacity, battery chemistry and airline approval can affect carriage. Smart luggage also needs its own check: a removable battery and a tiny permitted built-in component are not the same as a large non-removable battery. A suitcase’s marketing description is not enough to establish compliance.

Keep batteries accessible, protect them as required and follow the operating airline’s restrictions, which can be stricter than a general baseline. Do not promise acceptance solely because a device falls under a familiar capacity number.

A useful calculator interruption

When the user chooses “move items to checked bag” or “gate-check cabin bag,” show the safety check before a savings claim. The site should never suggest hiding a battery, mislabeling a device or asking staff to ignore a restriction. Link to the current FAA guidance and the airline’s policy for the specific device.
