Can Your Family Pool Checked-Baggage Weight?

Do not add everyone’s allowance unless the airline permits it

Two travelers with 23 kg each do not necessarily have permission to pack one 30 kg bag and one 16 kg bag without a surcharge. British Airways applies its ordinary 23 kg limit per bag; a lighter second bag does not erase the first bag’s excess.

Ryanair permits qualifying purchased checked-weight pooling on the same flight and reservation, while retaining an individual-piece maximum. easyJet also allows eligible ordinary hold-weight pooling under its conditions, but sports equipment is not simply part of that ordinary pool.

Piece count and weight are different purchases

A weight upgrade can increase what one purchased piece may hold without authorizing another physical bag. Cebu Pacific’s upgraded 32 kg piece, for example, is not automatically two checked pieces totaling 32 kg.

Before distributing family luggage, write down the permitted number of pieces, whether weight is per piece or pooled, the maximum for any individual bag, and the exact booking/flight requirement. Keep special equipment and child-related exceptions separate.

A safer packing comparison

Show both the original and repacked arrangement in the calculator. Verify every resulting piece against the correct limit before comparing prices. A mathematically balanced total is not enough: the arrangement must be accepted by the airline. Separate tickets, different flights or different carriers can invalidate a pooling assumption even when the travelers are members of the same family.
