“Free” describes a specific entitlement
A free first standard bag is not an unlimited-weight, unlimited-size promise. Delta’s card benefit explicitly applies to qualifying bags that are not overweight or oversized. A different cabin entitlement may permit a heavier included bag, but it must be matched to the passenger and bag number.
Check four things before relying on a waiver: who receives it, how many pieces it covers, the allowed weight per piece, and the accepted size. Also check the operating carrier; a marketing flight number does not automatically carry every benefit to a partner.
A useful order for the calculator
Establish the fare or cabin allowance first. Apply valid status or card benefits only according to their stacking rules. Then assess the actual bag against the resulting allowance. Do not subtract a standard base fee from an unrelated excess component.
An additional paid heavy bag may also be sold as a combined tariff. Lufthansa’s tables distinguish excess on an already included piece from an additional piece with excess. Charging the combined additional-bag package and then adding its included surcharge again would overcharge the estimate.
When a charge seems wrong
Ask the airline which entitlement and bag number it used. Preserve the itemized receipt and fare information. A traveler with an included heavier piece has a different question from someone whose card only waived a standard first bag. This is why a support request should describe the booking conditions, not just say “my bag was supposed to be free.”
