Ryanair includes one small underseat bag measuring up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm with all of its fares. The bag must fit under the seat in front of you. That allowance is separate from a larger 55 × 40 × 20 cm, 10 kg cabin bag that comes with Priority & 2 Cabin Bags or an eligible bundle. A U.S. traveler using Ryanair on an onward European flight should check that Ryanair segment separately from the transatlantic carrier.
Two cabin products with different storage places
| Product | Published maximum | Where it travels | Included in Basic? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small personal bag | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | Under the seat | Yes |
| 10 kg cabin bag with Priority | 55 × 40 × 20 cm | Overhead locker | No, unless separately added |
The dimensions are a three-sided box, not a single 90 cm linear allowance. For example, a packed 39 × 29 × 19 cm backpack fits within each published side. A 42 × 27 × 18 cm backpack has a smaller total than 90 cm but still exceeds the 40 cm side if no orientation places it within all three limits. Measure protruding handles, pockets and any flexible bulge after packing. The personal item checker accepts centimeters and compares the outside sides.
For U.S. tape measures, 40 × 30 × 20 cm is approximately 15.75 × 11.81 × 7.87 inches. This is a mathematical conversion for measuring; Ryanair publishes the limit in centimeters. A bag labeled “16 × 12 × 8 inches” is slightly larger than the exact metric box on every side, so use the original centimeter rule near the boundary.
Fare names can mislead the packing decision
Ryanair's Basic fare includes the small underseat item only. Its Regular fare includes Priority boarding plus the second 10 kg cabin bag. A Plus bundle includes a checked 20 kg bag, which is not the same as permission to bring a 20 kg bag overhead. The airline also sells checked products of different weights. Review the actual reservation rather than inferring cabin access from a purchased checked-bag label.
For an infant traveling on an adult's lap, Ryanair describes a separate 5 kg baby bag and baby-equipment rules. That does not enlarge the adult's ordinary personal-item box. If you need a stroller or medical item, read the relevant airline rule before arriving at the gate.
When a trip has two airlines
Ryanair's cabin box applies to the Ryanair-operated segment. Another airline may allow a larger item, but the tighter Ryanair segment still determines whether the same bag works through the full journey. If a connection is on separate tickets, baggage transfer and a new bag purchase are separate questions. Check both booking records and the connection guide. The Ryanair profile also explains checked products and why a European fee should not be silently converted into a U.S. dollar quote.
