U.S. Domestic Baggage Fees

Flying within the U.S.? Your fare and ticket date can change the bag price, and Hawaii or Puerto Rico may use a different table from a mainland flight.

Start with your itinerary

  1. Write down your first and final airports, plus any stopover or separate ticket.
  2. Check which airline actually flies each leg, even if a different name appears on the booking.
  3. Find the fare you bought and the dates you booked or changed it and will travel.
  4. Count each traveler’s included bags and benefits, then measure the packed bags.
  5. Compare the charge and currency shown before you pay online and at the airport.

Why a familiar fee may not apply

An airline’s domestic fee can be useful background, but it may not be the price for this route. Open the policy for your destination and check the amount shown in your booking before you pay.

Where the price can change

On one U.S. trip, the ticket date can matter as much as the departure date. American’s 2026 first- and second-bag rows use an April ticket boundary, and its Basic Economy row has a later May boundary. Southwest has a separate April boundary and different inclusion on Choice Extra. Hawaii interisland travel should not be copied from mainland prices.

A trip example

A traveler bought an American Main Cabin ticket in April 2026 and changed the flight later. Before using a first-bag row, determine which ticketing date the current policy treats as controlling. If the return is on Southwest Choice Extra, price that direction separately because its included-bag rule is not an American discount.
