Begin with the fee category, not an accusation
A receipt can contain the ordinary bag charge, weight, size, agent service and tax. Ask what each line represents before concluding that an overweight band was applied incorrectly. Also verify the fare, cabin, bag number, operator and original ticket date.
The public cases in this pack show why evidence classification matters. An advocacy publisher describes a Frontier gate-charge dispute and a goodwill refund after intervention. A Reddit poster reports a heavy-bag charge and later reimbursement. Another AA discussion raises cabin allowance and scale-reading questions without independently confirming a refund. These are not universal precedents or audited receipts.
Evidence worth keeping
Save the itemized receipt, bag tag, original fare details and any permitted photo of the bag or displayed measurement. Write a brief chronological account while events are fresh. Keep names and private travel documents out of public posts; provide necessary identifiers only through the airline’s official secure channel.
A factual request template
I am requesting a review of the baggage charge for my flight on [date]. The receipt lists [fee and amount]. My ticket was issued on [date] in [fare/cabin], and this was bag number [number]. The recorded weight/size was [measurement]. Please explain which policy and allowance were applied, and refund any amount charged in error. I have attached the receipt and relevant booking evidence through this official channel.
A clear request leaves room for the airline to identify a valid exception or correct a mistake. Do not describe a refund as completed until there is evidence it was actually issued.
